After obtaining the necessary background information about your student, it is time to beginning assessing their current reading abilities and struggles. To start, one must identify the current reading level of your student by performing a Qualitative Reading Inventory (QRI) sight word analysis. This assessment should begin with the list of words two levels below the student’s current grade level. Using an appropriate coding system, take note of your students reading responses as the read the list of words aloud. When it becomes apparent that the student is struggling to read the list of words, you can offer the student the opportunity to stop where they are, or to finish the list they are on. The students reading level will be identified as the last list they were able to read through with little difficulty. This level, called instructional, is one in which students read between 14 and 17 words correct in a list of 20. This reading level determines which level DRA assessment your student should be administered.
